Nearly everyone in St. Cloud used to welcome the fourth Thursday in April as “Take Your Daughter to Work Day.” Since its inception in 1993, it’s an observance that was enthusiastically adopted by American parents and employers. It took ten years before officially expanding to include boys, but (in St. Cloud, at least) most parents and companies hadn’t left boys in the lurch for that long. In 2007, “Take Our Children to Work Day” was the outing’s more accurate title.

Then came Covid-19, the pandemic that dislocated so many American norms. Where St. Cloud real estate was concerned, key among the reversals was a reshuffling of where work was taking place. Home offices took over living room corners and spare bedrooms by the thousands, even as former office places were shuttered. In 2020, “Take Our Children to Work Day” was pretty much a rainout. If mom or dad don’t often report to work, taking daughters there, when ‘there’ isn’t where work happens, loses meaning. The result was many a bemused commentary:

Because the value of a first introduction to the grownups’ professional world had become evident during its three-decade history, inventive parents and employers decided to keep it alive, come what may. By last year, virtual approaches had taken hold for many, bringing “the workplace to children’s fingertips.” This year, there will be lots of that—but we can hope that the real world of actual out-of-the-home workplace visits will be making a hardy comeback, enriching St. Cloud kids’ experiences, widening their horizons—and letting them get out in the real world!
