Have you ever walked up to a house, opened the door, gasped and realized this is the one? Have you walked into a room in said house, looked at the arrangement, the color or just the walk-in closet, closed your eyes and imagined soaking your life into the room? There is an indescribable feeling we have, a sort of connection so to speak or maybe a connection to spaces separated by mere walls. I have never separated my rooms from my feelings, nor have I ever let my imagination wander; rediscover how rooms make me feel. Let’s take a journey into our imagination, appreciate the rooms we have and crave for, those we dearly want or maybe need, or those that would make us whole.
Growing up as a child, doing my best to understand this mystery called life, that was dropped on my hands since conception; I would test my limits, see how far I could go without getting in trouble. I remember how my parents sent me to school with writing only to come back home empty handed, an unfortunate circumstance of carelessness that demanded an ass whooping. To be honest, I deserved all the punishment in the world (didn’t think that then) for being irresponsible, but at the same time, I knew of this place that I considered mine, and I could go there at any time. Within the confines of my parent’s wall, was a closet, uniquely designed for my own peace. This is where I could go and call on my, ‘quit your whining’, ‘focus on how to get better’, ‘it will only last a short while’, ‘you are the best at what you do’, ‘you are a good person’ etcetera place. It was a closet, and it was not well arranged, however, no one could find me and yes, when I finally emerged, I came out of the closet in peace.
Fast forward to adulthood and your space balloons up, you finally need a bigger closet that is affordable yet has the almost look. A kind of closet that your measly check can afford. Life gives you curve-balls and change ups. You then get that fast ball you have been waiting for and without hesitation belt the stupid baseball out of the park, get pre-approved for a mortgage, find a realtor(ME) and the search begins. Looking for houses can be frustrating and sometimes can seem futile until one day, you open that glass door into the living room of a lifetime.
Dreamy would describe it, but there are not enough words to describe the connection this room has with your soul. ‘SOLD’ is the word you are looking for as you look at your realtor; speechless as you walk around, you marvel at the vaulted ceilings, open concept that connects the living room, dining and kitchen. Your imagination goes wild; and you can see yourself mounting your 50inch flat screen TV over your fireplace, all you can imagine is yourself hosting that Super Bowl party that you have always wanted to host. The natural lighting is conducive for your morning addiction of reading a book while drinking coffee as you stare at the sunrise. The living room has just connected with you in such a way that all that’s stopping you from moving in is securing financing. Who cares anyway, you leave that fight for another day.
While I was thinking about this post, I had a lot of ideas in mind for what it takes for my ideal living room but as I gain more experience in the Real Estate business, walking into different homes and listening to the different vibes expelled from each room. I have come to realize each and every person has a radical disagreement of an ideal living room. It has driven me to one simple conclusion that we are all drawn from a different cloth and if you want to be happily satisfied with your home purchase, find your damn closet, don’t settle and please don’t feel pressured to but your home since it has taken too long, and god forbid your realtor is getting a little impatient. Remember, that realtor is probably never going to set foot in that house again unless you invite him/her, or he/she is about to sell that bad boy. I will quote a flick, ‘You do You Glen Coco, You do You’, Find your closet.
