Is your carpeting over a decade old? Time to update.
Carpet is out! Oh my gaud!, really? What happened to carpeting? Buyers seem to believe it traps dirt, germs, stains, it’s dusty and retains the personalities of the people who lived in it! Okay really? Well wait a minute, not necessarily.
Carpet is still popular in bedrooms/dens and some living spaces like a second great room, although sales are trending toward soft nylon, or natural fibers in natural and light colors with short loops. It almost looks a bit industrial, although it is still an option if you like carpet. Carpet is not popular in main areas and not the best choice in an open floor plan concept if you need to do some updating. Carpeting also remains the most economical choice.
Hard woods and luxury laminate are the trends for main living areas and open floor plans in wide planks in the gray tones toward the a deep chocolate or espresso colors.
Reclaimed wood is extremely popular and any size planks are appropriate when reclaimed. Original oak floors are very desirable and color is not an issue as homes with original oak will most likely be in the golden oak hue, which adds to its vintage appeal.
If you are going to tile a space choose ceramic tiles or laminate tiles that are larger or planks. The smaller tiles are not trending right now unless there is a design element which lends itself to an area of smaller tiles.
The other floor trend is stained and sealed cement. Not the most comfortable flooring so you will want to use it for the areas that are not heavily traveled in the home like laundry rooms, great rooms and garage floors. For the do-it-your-selfer, hardware stores carry kits which are extremely economical, take a little prep work and 4 to 8 hours to seal and about 48 hours of drying time.
Flooring is a big visual item and very important to show that your home has been well cared for and consistently kept up to date. This is not an item you want ignore!
